The Director, Financial Excellence reports to the VP, Finance. The role is accountable to the VP, Finance for providing the Board of Directors, Finance and Audit Committee and Executive and Leadership teams with quality reporting, advice and assistance to support informed operational decision-making. The Director, Financial Excellence provides coaching and supervision to 2 key management positions, the Controller and Leader, Financial Sustainability. Through these 2 direct reports and a team comprised of approximately 13 persons, the Director, Financial Services has a mandate to ensure that the company has sound accounting, payroll, financial reporting and controls, treasury, procurement, tax, budgeting, forecasting, risk mitigation polices and practices in place to support effective financial self-sufficiency and achievement of the organization’s strategic goals.
The candidate must be an exceptional people and financial services leader with a proactive, inclusive and accountable style. Able to build strong relationships across all levels of an organization, the candidate must be a strategic thinker with abundant common sense, a positive attitude, high integrity and excellent problem-solving, writing, presentation and implementation skills. A fast learner, it would be helpful for the candidate to have expert knowledge of Not-for-Profit Accounting Standards, and previous experience in presenting to Audit Committees and Boards of Directors. The candidate must have the ability to build and motivate a high-performing team in a progressive unionized contact and to communicate financial information to audiences with varying levels of financial literacy. A university graduate with a degree in Commerce or Business Administration, the candidate must be a CPA in good standing with at least 15 years of progressively more complex financial management experience in a wide range of areas, including: financial reporting and analysis; budgeting; controls; cash management and treasury; financial systems; payroll administration; and procurement. Ideally, the candidate launched a career in accounting and finance by working with one of the Big 4 accounting firms and then, intentionally and successfully, moved from public practice to leadership roles in the public and/or private sectors.
