General Accountant

Summary of Position

Reporting to the Controller or CFO, the General Accountant is responsible for providing assistance in all accounting and administrative activities within the group of small public company(s).  These companies are in the Canadian oil and gas production and South American mineral exploration sectors.  This is a full time, permanent position starting at approximately 30 hours per week.

Duties

The duties may include but are not be limited to the following:

  • Upload sales, reconcile and prepare the monthly/quarterly operating summary report for review by Management
  • Record and review operating expenses; prepare and record journal entries
  • Assist in preparation and maintenance of quarterly/year-end files and working papers:  pre-paid expenses, accruals, capital activity, warrants, stock options, balance sheet account analysis, debt schedules, related parties
  • Coordinate with year-end external auditors
  • Review monthly reporting from foreign subsidiaries; maintain month end FX revaluations
  • Perform detailed accounts payable/cash flow analysis, prepare cheque/EFT runs
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations; prepare and submit monthly or quarterly GST returns
  • Prepare or assist in preparing regulatory forms and reports as required:  press releases, material change reports, TSX forms, annual returns, annual meeting material
  • Create and prepare reports & analyses when requested in a timely and accurate manner
  • Assist in improving/streamlining accounting processes
  • Other duties as requested

Skills and Requirements

  • Must be a genuinely well-rounded accountant with excellent administrative skills who is willing to assist with any task required (as are all current management team members)
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Be able to successfully multi-task and manage a number of priorities simultaneously for multiple companies and senior officers
  • Having a CPA designation would be an asset
  • Related work experience required (or a combination of education and experience that suits the role)
  • Ability to interpret and analyze financial data to be included in financial reports and statements
  • Enthusiastic, self-motivated individual who will naturally assume duties as their own
  • Attention to detail in all areas of work
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficient at Microsoft office, Excel and PowerPoint
  • JV Nexus experience or other oil & gas accounting software is an advantage, with an ability to adapt and learn new software
  • For the right candidate, this role could evolve into a Controller position as companies grow
