POSITION OVERVIEW: Y2Y is seeking a professional for the full-time position of Financial Controller. They will report to the President and Chief Scientist and be responsible for all aspects of financial management of the organization, as well as government compliance in both Canada and the United States, human resources and operations. The Financial Controller is a member of the management team of the organization, participating in meetings and decision making.

POSITION OBJECTIVES:

Contribute to the operations of Y2Y, a Conservation NGO and independent charity in Canada and the United States by leading:

• Financial management;
• Government compliance;
• Human resource matters;
• Member of the Senior Administrative Team.

Support for and assistance to the Y2Y President, board, and the staff as related to these operations.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain Y2Y’s compliance as a registered charity, including overseeing annual audits, tax return submissions and the issuance of charitable tax receipts.

  • Oversee financial systems and controls for both actual and budgeted results for three organizations (Y2Y Canada, Y2Y US, and Y2Y Foundation).

  • Prepare and present quarterly financial reports detailing both actual and budgeted results to the President, staff and sub-committees of the board.

  • Engage on various board related matters; attend and present financial information at Board meetings, ensure Directors and Officers Insurance in place for 3 corporations, and provide Board Members with the financial information they require to allow them to fulfil their Board responsibilities.

  • Manage the budget process; implement a process to collect information by project from staff to develop the budget, understand variances, and assist in producing quarterly projections to allow management and the board to evaluate performance.

  • Manage sub-grants, subcontracts, project agreements, and other fiscal relationships.

  • Compile financials for donor reports.

  • Oversee outsourced payroll in both the U.S. and in Canada – from timesheets to payroll.

  • Manage the treasury and cash management functions, including banking, investments, and exchange

    funds from US$ to Canadian$ as needed and opportunistically to take advantage of favourable rates.

  • Manage and continuously improve financial policies and procedures and ensure documentation is up-to-

    date.

 

  • Oversee management and implementation of organisational risk matrix for use by management and the board.

  • Compile political activity reports received throughout year and report on annual returns.

  • Primary liaison and supervisor to human resource consultants and working together on benefits plans; staff hiring and management; support annual evaluation process; maintain updated employee manuals;

    improve policies and procedures; and ensure compliance with labour laws.

  • Oversee accounting staff

  • As member of senior team ability to look beyond specifics of job to organizational well-being and senior

    administrative team decision-making

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Interest in and passion for Y2Y as a region and conservation more generally.

    • Five years administration and management experience, with preference for non-profit experience and

      working across international boundaries.

    • Master’s/Bachelor degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or a relevant field. Professional Accounting

      designation (CPA, CA, CMA or CGA) is highly desirable.

    • Demonstrated ability to organize. Able to manage multiple time-sensitive projects simultaneously.

    • Adaptable self-starter and self-manager with ability to set priorities and efficiently use time.

    • Experience in budgeting and risk management.

    • Excellent interpersonal skills; enjoys supporting staff and being responsive to staff needs.

    • Strong contemporary computer skills. Familiarity with Microsoft package especially excel, and

      QuickBooks and/or other accounting software. Proficiency in Email and internet applications.

    • A good sense of humor and commitment to building constructive working relationships to solve

      challenging problems.

      TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

      We prefer this position to be based at Y2Y’s Canmore, Alberta office, but the position may be remote as long as the individual can come to the office 2-3 days every other week. Salary is commensurate with experience, ranging from $95,000-$115,000 and includes Y2Y’s excellent set of benefits. The Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative is an equal opportunity employer.
