We’re looking for an experienced professional to join our Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund (OCIF) team to help us attract and support transformative investments in Calgary.

Job Summary:

The Managing Director, OCIF has the primary responsibility for the management and execution of the OCIF program. This includes identifying opportunities, evaluating business case proposals and fund disbursements, team development and program reporting.

This is a full-time contract ending on December 31st, 2022, with the opportunity to extend.

Key Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with the OCIF Team, create and execute on the strategic direction of the OCIF business plan to meet annual performance indicators.
  • Lead the daily activities of the OCIF team; provide direction and coaching to project resources and provide program reports to the VP, Corporate Projects.
  • Develop relationships with clients, intermediaries, stakeholders and the OCIF Board to generate strong investments that diversify Calgary’s economy.
  • Develop deal strategies for anchors and ecosystems files as circumstances warrant and work with CED departments to deliver a team approach to file progression.
  • Actively engage in the business case and contribution agreement processes including:
    • Conducting due diligence including financial analysis, company sustainability, project risks and metrics;
    • Coordinating and conducting due diligence and recommend terms and conditions for term sheets and contribution agreements;
    • Executing on reporting, file triage and scoring/evaluation; and
    • Working with OCIF Director on monitoring and compliance reporting and providing recommendation for release of funds.
  • Work with VP Corporate Projects on reports for OCIF and CED Board of Directors and attend board and committee meetings to provide program updates.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting or finance or a related area. CPA, or other like designations and experience, as well as financial management designation required.
  • Education/training in economic development is an asset.

Experience:

  • Minimum 14 years of progressively responsible experience in a directly related area during which both professional and management capability have been clearly demonstrated.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience with government funding programs, venture capital programs, and mergers & acquisitions is required.

Note: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Key Competencies:

  • Strong understanding of the Alberta venture capital industry, as well as understanding of government grants available to businesses looking to relocate or expand into the Calgary area. This includes knowledge of the program structures, players, opportunities and challenges.
  • Demonstrates strong financial acumen and has a strong ability to evaluate investment strategies as well as measuring results.
  • Skilled at reviewing investment and legal documents and working with external counsel to identify risks and negotiate terms.
  • Strong ability to interpret large volumes of information and form conclusions and recommendations.
  • Experienced team leader with an ability to foster a collaborative approach that builds a sense of team. 
  • Ability to think critically and function in a dynamic environment in a structured, timely and politically sensitive manner.
  • Understanding of and ability to engage a diverse community of stakeholders including, but not limited to, civic, provincial and national governments, local post-secondary institutions, the innovation ecosystem as well as business leaders.
  • Exceptional client and relationship management, including the ability to have difficult conversations.
  • Sound judgment and ability in handling matters of a confidential and/or sensitive nature.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely with stakeholders.

Unique Working Conditions:

This position may require long and/or irregular hours including preparing materials to meet deadlines or attendance at business functions and special events. The successful candidate works effectively within a team environment and maintains composure when under pressure.  The successful candidate must be able to balance and prioritize demands for information from a variety of sources, both internal and external, and deal effectively with politically sensitive as well as confidential information.
