Associate Director, Financial Reporting, Finance

The Financial Reporting team within Finance is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Associate Director.

This position reports to the Director, Financial Reporting, and will manage a team of financial professionals and accountants in training who offer consultation and support services to the University relating to financial analysis and reporting and process/procedures/policy/systems improvement and development. Financial Reporting develops, analyzes and reports on the monthly/quarterly/yearly financial statements, forecasts and variance reports for the University Senior Administration and University Board committees.

The Associate Director is required to have expertise in highly complex and technical financial concepts, and is expected to work with complex accounting, budgeting, forecasting and data warehousing systems and processes. This position involves complex problem solving skills, strong analytical abilities, extensive organizational knowledge and managerial skills, sound judgment, expertise in technical financial concepts, accounting systems and processes in connection with the finance and budget portfolios at the University.
 
The Associate Director is required to possess strong communication and client relation skills as they deal with multiple and competing deadlines and act as a resource to all areas of the University and various external clients.  The Associate Director must perform in an environment where there is a potential for ambiguity and continuous change (constantly changing technology, systems, processes) and shifting priorities and is required to deal with constant high volumes of work which could create high stress levels.  The Associate Director is required to manage own and staff's time and hours of work to ensure all jobs are completed on a timely basis, and meet the needs of various parties.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Responsible for the leadership, service delivery and integrity of the External Financial Reporting team.
  • Provide leadership in the area of effective financial internal control and demonstrate a high degree of initiative and objectivity, and the ability to balance an effective financial control framework against risk, safeguarding of assets and the efficient use of resources.
  • Work closely with the Associate Director, Internal Controls to ensure all audit findings are evaluated and addressed accordingly.
  • Play a key role in developing and maintaining the control framework associated with the University's financial accounting records.
  • Provide communication and education to faculties and units in connection with the University's financial reports.
  • Participate in the ongoing development and improvement of financial policies and procedures through evaluation of internal controls.
  • Contribute to and take responsibility for decisions made as part of the management team reporting to the Director.
  • Manage the recruitment, performance evaluation, development and training for several staff members.
  • Responsible for the preparation and/or completion of timely and accurate periodic financial statements, financial and management reports, special assignments and projects to meet the needs of the Board of Governors, Board Committees, Senior Executive, Faculties and Departments, the Office of the Auditor General, governmental and regulatory bodies and other outside agencies.
  • Review and compilation of financial analysis and forecasts for inclusion in various reporting packages.
  • Manage the preparation of complex reporting in accordance with Public Sector Accounting Standards.
  • Liaise with departments, faculties, researchers and senior administration to ensure the understanding of and compliance with financial policies and procedures.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • CPA designation and a related university degree.
  • 10 or more years of work and management experience in various accounting, budget, and analyst functions as well as evidence of team leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others and to handle difficult situations while maintaining effective relationships.
  • Ability to think logically, solve problems and be critically objective with an ability to develop innovative solutions to problems.
  • Must be able to work on own or in a team environment.
  • Experience with and a solid understanding of internal control and risk management frameworks. 
  • Thorough knowledge of business processes and best practices.
  • Intermediate to expert user of complex computer software applications, including enterprise reporting systems, financial systems, data warehouse and business intelligence tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are essential in exercising tact and diplomacy regarding sensitive and confidential issues, as well as use of negotiation, presentation, engagement and facilitation skills.
