PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Reporting to the Manager Accounting Policy, you will be a key member of the Finance team, working with internal stakeholders to meet strategic goals by providing clear and concise accounting guidance as it affects specific transactions and policies of the company.  You will ensure that CP’s accounting policies are appropriate to meet business needs and practices, and that unusual and complex transactions are accounted for in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and regulatory requirements.  You will also be responsible for monitoring and reporting the anticipated impact to CP of emerging Accounting Standards and industry issues. 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Perform and document accounting research to determine accounting implications of specific, unusual and complex transactions. Assist in the resolution of accounting matters, including the coordination of cross functional participants and external auditors or accounting advisors, as required.
  • Review new significant contracts for potential complex accounting implications and provide guidance on required accounting to Finance and business representatives.
  • Monitor and document new and emerging accounting pronouncements and regulatory requirements and prepare guidance to management of potential impacts to CP.
  • Provide leadership to, or act as key member of, cross functional team implementing new accounting standards and developing and maintaining CP Accounting Policies, including providing training on these policies to Finance and business representatives.
  • Organize Accounting Policy Committee, including preparing and presenting materials and recording minutes.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual reporting, disclosure and audit requirements.
  • Assist with preparation of comment letters to standard setters for new accounting pronouncements and/or in response to comment letters issued specifically to CP.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives within the Accounting Policy function.
  • Assist with maintenance and application of CP’s policy for Delegation of Monetary Authority.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • A CPA Accounting designation is preferred.  Candidates in process of gaining CPA designation may be considered.
  • Knowledge of US GAAP/IFRS;
  • Communication Skills both verbal and written;
  • Ability to interpret complex accounting policies and accounting treatment and translate to business application;
  • Ability to work as a key team member and, as required, provide leadership to cross functional teams, obtain consensus / agreement on recommendations;
  • Ability to interact with management across the Company;
  • Previous railway knowledge including Rail Industry accounting would be considered an asset.

Management Conductor Program:
