BFA Accountant

Be the financial expert who gives sound practical advice to your business partner. Use your innovative thinking and keen understanding of your business partner’s operations to provide timely, meaningful and accurate financial information.

Within the Financial and Corporate Services Department, you will be part of the Business Financial Analytics team supporting the financial needs of one of our various client areas within the City as they strive to create a safe, healthy, and vibrant city. Working within a team environment, you will use your financial expertise to provide sound financial advice and perform financial analytics. You will also:

  • Prepare monthly performance reporting and analytical reviews of revenues and expenditures, review budget to identify variances and estimate year-end projections

  • Review historical trends and project future directions including forecasting, modeling, cash flow, etc.

  • Perform financial analysis to assist in the development of operating and/or capital budget proposals, business cases or council reports

  • Prepare budgets, perform budget consolidations and update and maintain information in the City’s budgeting system

  • Support the Senior Accountants or Finance Managers in providing advice and guidance to operational business partners

  • Ensure adherence of financial practices to City policies and procedures

  • Review and recommend process changes to reduce errors, streamline process and manage risk

  • Participate in a constructive and collaborative manner with other departments and stakeholders within the City in the analysis of financial activities

  • Perform other related duties, as required

Qualifications:

  • A recognized professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA)

  • 3 years of progressively responsible accounting experience including financial planning, budgeting, financial analytics and variance analysis  

  • Technical proficiency in Google applications, Microsoft Office, particularly Excel required

  • Ability to take initiative, think logically, problem solve independently, and complete detailed work with a high degree of accuracy is required

  • A strong understanding of acceptable business practices, internal controls and policies within a large corporate environment

  • High level of analytical and conceptual skills to identify and resolve complex financial issues

  • Excellent written and verbal communication, customer service, time management, and prioritization skills 

  • Aptitude to maintain working relationships with all levels of management and non-management personnel in a complex environment

  • Interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Technical proficiency with a major financial and analytical software system is required; experience with SAP, Questica Budgeting, or PeopleSoft is an asset

  • Strong problem solving skills and effective communication are expected to resolve operational and business issues

  • Commitment to excellence in customer service while ensuring adherence to professional standards

Up to 3 permanent full-time position and up to 3 temporary full time positions up to 11 months in duration

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday

The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Salary: $38.287-$48.068 Hourly; $79,942.20-$100,367.12(Annually)
