Canary is a biofuel producer focused on manufacturing biodiesel for the Canadian and US biodiesel markets. Canary's first plant is located in Lethbridge, Alberta and is currently getting upgraded to produce 18-19 million gallons per year of "Generation 2" biodiesel and glycerin.

Financial Reporting Analyst

Job Overview

Reporting to the Controller and the VP of Finance at the Calgary Corporate Office, the Financial Reporting Analyst will be a key member of the Finance team at Canary Biofuels and will be primarily responsible for Compliance and Financial Reporting and Audit and Tax functions.

Key Responsibility Areas:

Compliance/Reporting

  • 52-109 compliance to support CEO & CFO certification of financial reports
  • Authorization policy implementation
  • Accounting standards research and implementation
  • Develop and test internal procedures and control
  • Prepare financial statements, note disclosure and MD&A
  • Assist in the preparation of other continuous disclosure
  • Legal entity financial statement preparation
  • Coordinate and review divisional inputs for financial reporting
  • Prepare monthly divisional and consolidated variance analysis from budget
  • Consolidate financial reports
  • Improve capital reporting, review, and analysis procedures
  • Prepare and track control deviations
  • Prepare bank compliance reporting

Audit/Tax

  • Preparation of corporate tax returns
  • Primary contact for all audit functions
  • Control testing for 52-109

Finance Team

  • Provide support for departmental initiatives
  • Assist with formation of Corporate Services model
  • Manage share-based payment calculations and disclosures
  • Impairment testing
  • Track and maintain commitments

General Services

  • Treasury back up
  • Ad hoc scenario planning, reporting and analysis
  • Identify and train a “back up person” to support Financial Reporting function

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary qualifications resulting in a diploma or a degree in commerce with a focus on accounting/finance
  • CPA designation required
  • Strong (3+ years) of finance or accounting experience and knowledge in tax compliance. 
  •  Strong Microsoft Excel skills 
  •  Experience with Sage or similar system would be considered an asset
  •  Attention to details and accuracy, with a high ability to problem solve independently 
  •  Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deliver on strict timelines 
  •  Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills 

Skills Experience in the following programs is required: 

  • Microsoft Office (advanced/intermediate excel skills) 
  • Ability to learn and adapt with new technology 
  • Familiarity with office 365 programs
