THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Director, Finance and Community Economic Development, the Manager, Accounting is a key member of the management team, overseeing a small staff of professionals whose scope of responsibilities includes all aspects of accounting at Bissell Centre.

The Manager, Accounting provides support to the Directors and Managers, by providing specialized expertise in areas of budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting. This individual is responsible to ensure the accuracy of all accounting record keeping and to ensure accounting/finance reporting adhere to the standard accounting practice and program funding requirements. Bissell Centre's annual expenditures exceed $17 million.

Key roles & responsibilities

  • Review journal entries, balance account reconciliations, document transactions, and complete variance analysis.
  • Manage month-end and ensure completion by the 15th of each month.
  • Coordinate the preparation of financial statements, financial reports, and special analyses on a timely basis.
  • Support Program Management in understanding their funding agreements.
  • Communicate financial information to others in a way they can use to make informed decisions.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain finance policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Find improvements and efficiencies for Bissell’s processes using automated information systems.
  • Oversee the preparation of the detailed departmental budgets that role into consolidated budget and monitor the implementation of budgets to track progress and present financial metrics both internally and externally.
  • Prepare proforma budgets and special reports for funders and others.
  • Optimize the handling of banking relationships and initiate appropriate strategies to enhance cash positions.
  • Prepare accounting memos on financial reporting issues.
  • Manage cash flow and forecasting.
  • Establish and implement short and long-term departmental goals.
  • Support in the implementation of strategic business and/or operational plans, projects, programs, and systems.
  • Prepare year-end audit working papers and be the primary point of contact during the audit field work.
  • GST reconciliation and reporting, as well as T3010 reporting.
  • Other duties and projects as required by the Director, Finance and Community Economic Development and the Officers.

THE PERSON

Qualifications & Education Requirements

  • Relevant academic preparation including a degree in finance or accounting combined with a Chartered Professional Accounting (CPA) designation.  An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
  • Solid experience leading a team and working within a diverse and multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Adaptable and resilient, with the ability to build relationships and trust quickly.
  • Ability to self-manage, assign, and supervise accounting tasks, and work in a collaborative environment.
  • An energetic and progressive leader with a strong commitment to the Bissell Centre’s mission, vision, and values; this individual will have a strong work ethic, be committed to excellence and continuous improvement, be a strong team player, and will ensure accountability of self and others.
  • Strong communications and interpersonal skills. Can communicate accounting concepts and issues to non-accountants and individuals with varying levels of financial expertise.
  • Proven interpersonal, organizational, technological, communication, and conflict resolution skills; strong customer service orientation and the ability to lead and collaborate effectively in a team environment are needed.
  • Experience in a non-profit environment, sector knowledge and familiarity with issues of poverty and Edmonton’s urban core would be considered an asset.
