Board of Trustees' Audit and Risk Committee Member (volunteer)

The Calgary Board of Education Board of Trustees is seeking volunteers for it’s Audit and Risk Committee.

The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) is the largest school board in Western Canada, serving approximately 124,000 students. It has an operating budget of nearly 1.3 billion dollars. The Audit and Risk Committee reports to the Board of Trustees and is comprised of two elected trustees and five volunteer individuals external to the Calgary Board of Education.

The purpose of the committee is to assist the Board of Trustees in fulfilling is fiscal and risk management oversight responsibilities by ensuring the assets of CBE are safeguarded and resources are utilized effectively. Specific duties of the committee include recommend the external auditor, review and recommend the annual audit plan, assess the effectiveness of the external auditor, review and recommend the year-end financial statements and audit findings, review internal audit reports, review quarterly budget variance reports, and review the risk management framework and related reports.

Volunteers serve on the Committee for three years and attend approximately four meetings per year in January, March, June and November. The role also involves reviewing financial, audit and risk management documents in advance of meetings. The ideal candidate will have a background in public accounting, business or law, having competencies in the areas of:

  • Financial Management/Accounting Audit
  • Financial Planning
  • Internal Audit
  • Risk Management
  • Corporate Leadership
  • Public Sector/Not for Profit Public Experience
  • Government Affairs/Public Policy
