Tax Analyst, Interpretations and Objections and Senior Manager, Corporate Income Tax

As the Tax Analyst, your primary responsibility will involve reviewing objections filed under the Alberta tax acts and revenue programs and making fair and impartial recommendations for their resolution in accordance with Alberta legislation administered by TRA. 

Working as a member of a team of tax analysts and reporting to the Director, you may also have the following key responsibilities:
-    Provide support to Alberta Justice on tax appeals.
-    Review federal corporate income tax resolutions including review and approval of the recommendations of the Dispute Resolution Analyst for the resolution of related Alberta objections.

Additionally, you may be involved in technical interpretations on Alberta tax and other acts administered by TRA to internal and external stakeholders, drafting or updating technical publications, and assisting in the design and development of tax and revenue programs and processes.

You will work independently on your assigned files and projects with the support of the team and the Director. To be successful in this role you must be able to critically analyze complex legislation and case law, apply your understanding of accounting and tax to specific case facts to determine the most supportable response, and clearly communicate complex concepts with tact and discretion.

Senior Manager, Corporate Income Tax Unit
The Senior Manager, reporting to the Director, Corporate Income Tax has responsibility for leading the activities in the administration of the provisions of the Alberta Corporate Tax Act and Payment in Lieu of Tax (PILOT) Regulations. The Senior Manager is responsible for leading and managing the activities of a team of approximately 6 - 10 staff, responsible for the accurate assessment processing of all tax programs under the Alberta Corporate Tax Act and other related Regulations. These programs include the processing of the Innovation and Employment Grant, Allocation of Taxable Income, Functional Currency, Voluntary Disclosures, Calculation of Taxable Income PILOT, and related operational support. 
 
The Senior Manager is responsible to provide technical support and guidance to the Corporate Income Tax group (CIT) on all the Corporate Tax Programs. The position leads a team of skilled accountants to provide assurance that Alberta corporations comply with the legislation and program requirements and ensures taxes are collected in a manner that is accurate, and fair.
 
Some of the key characteristics required for success in the role are excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail, problem solving, and ability to think strategically.
 
Qualifications
Both positions require:

A university degree in business or a related field plus a professional accounting designation (CPA) and a minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience. (*Note role specific exceptions below)

Tax Analyst, Client and Legal Services Unit
A university degree in business or a related field plus a professional accounting designation (CPA) or law degree and a minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience is required. Alternatively, we will consider a professional accounting designation (CPA) and a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible, related experience.  The CPA In-Depth Tax Course would be an asset in these roles.

In addition to the above qualifications, your knowledge of the federal Income Tax Act and the following legislation administered by the TRA will contribute to your success in the role: 
-    Alberta Corporate Tax Act;
-    Fuel Tax Act; 
-    Tourism Levy Act; 
-    Tobacco Tax Act; 
-    Unclaimed Personal Property and Vested Property Act; 
-    Emergency 911 Levy Regulation under the Emergency 911 Act;
-    Crown’s Right of Recovery (President of Treasury Board and Minister of Finance) Regulation under the Crown's Rights of Recovery Act;  
-    Payment in Lieu of Tax Regulation and the Payment in Lieu of Tax (City of Medicine Hat) Regulation under the Electric Utilities Act; 
-    Payment in Lieu of Tax Regulation under the ABC Benefits Corporation Act;  and
-    Financial Administration Act. Payment in Lieu of Tax Regulation under the ABC Benefits Corporation Act;  and
-    Financial Administration Act. 

Senior Manager, Corporate Income Tax Unit
A professional accounting designation is required supplemented by 4 years experience related to the position. Experience with supervising employees and working with internal/external stakeholders in complex program environments is preferred.
 
In addition to the above qualifications, your knowledge of all relevant legislation that affects the administration of the Corporate Income Tax Program – specifically the Alberta Corporate Tax Act, the Federal Income Tax Act and is required. Knowledge of Administrative polices would be an asset.
