Title: Senior Accountant

Location: VCA Canada Animal Hospitals, #1, 6325 - 12 Street S.E. Calgary Alberta

Position: Hybrid (office/remote)

Reports to:  Manager of Financial Reporting

Contract: Maternity Leave, 15-month commitment with a possibility for an extension

Parking: On site

Gym: On site

Pets: Well behaved pets welcomed in the office

The Position:

As a Senior Accountant, you will join our Financial Reporting team, reporting to the Manager of Financial reporting. The successful applicant will be involved in a broad range of operational and financial reporting with responsibilities as follows:

  • Assist management in the evaluation of periodic results, including explanations for the budget, forecast and prior year variances
  • Prepare and review journal entries, working papers and reconciliations
  • Maintain lease portfolio tracking and related accounting in accordance with ASC 840 / 842, previous experience with Lucernex will be considered an asset
  • Assist with E-commerce reporting and period evaluation of performance
  • Analyze and reconcile variances between the general ledger, sub ledger and systems
  • Proactively identify and implement process improvements and efficiencies
  • Research, analyze and implement new accounting standards or changes to compliance requirements
  • Assist with managing the annual audit process
  • Document and ensure compliance with processes and internal controls
  • Develop a detailed understanding of ORACLE and how it connects to associated programs
  • Prepare ad hoc report requests from Operations teams and/or management
  • Provide support to junior accountants

Our ideal candidate:

  • A professional accounting designation such as a CPA

  • Minimum 4 years progressive experience in the accounting field, preferably in a high transactional industry or with an accounting firm

  • Thorough understanding of accounting standards, previous experience with US GAAP will be considered an asset.

  • Strong time management skills, able to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline driven environment with the ability to prioritize

  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and processes

  • Displays a positive attitude with a willingness to learn

  • A solution focused, collaborative approach to continuous improvement

  • Excellent oral and written communication and people skills; ability to quickly gain the trust and confidence of team members, leaders and others within the organization across different locations

  • A flexible and highly accountable individual with the desire to roll up their sleeves when necessary and an ability to keep an eye on the big picture

  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to ensuring deadlines are kept and achieved

  • Exceptional Excel skills with the ability to manage, analyze and simplify large amounts of data

  • Working knowledge of ORACLE or similar ERP systems and Power Query, Power BI or other data analytic tools would be an asset
