Associate Superintendent of Business and Operations

Due to the retirement of the incumbent, Rocky View Schools (RVS) invites applications for the position of Associate Superintendent of Business and Operations / Secretary-Treasurer. Duties will commence June 1, 2023, or as mutually agreed.

The Division
Bordering the City of Calgary to the north, west and east, Rocky View Schools is Alberta’s fifth largest school division, serving the educational needs of over 27,500 students within 53 schools, located in the City of Airdrie, the Town of Cochrane, the City of Chestermere, and Rocky View County.

RVS is located on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy including the Siksika, Kainai, Piikani Nations; the Tsuut'ina Nation, the Stoney-Nakoda, including the Chiniki, Bearspaw and Wesley Nations; and the Métis Nation of Alberta Region 3.

A rapidly growing division, RVS employs more than 3,000 staff, opened four new schools / major modernizations over the past 5 years, has one new school under construction and another major addition under design. RVS’ annual operating budget is over $300 million. RVS is in a strong financial position and known for its innovative culture. RVS’ Education Centre is located in Airdrie, one-half hour from downtown Calgary.

The Role
The Associate Superintendent of Business and Operations works closely with the Superintendent of Schools and the Board of Trustees. They directly oversee the following functions of the organization: Finance; Operations and Maintenance; Supply Management; Transportation; Caretaking; Legal Services and a variety of corporate services. They also act as the board’s secretary-treasurer and is responsible for the overall management of the Business and Operations Department and the legislated requirements of the secretary-treasurer role as defined in the Education Act.

The Candidate

RVS seeks a proven, collaborative leader with 10+ years of professional experience managing the business and operations of a comparable organization, preferably a school division or public sector organization. The ideal candidate has built and maintained high functioning, multi-disciplinary, dynamic teams. They have consistently demonstrated their ability to creatively solve problems, while overseeing a broad portfolio of services and supports. They are committed to the organization, which is evident through their actions.

The successful candidate holds a Masters degree in business, management, finance and/or public administration. Preferably, they possess a recognized accounting designation. They have experience partnering with executive staff resulting in the development and implementation of sound and creative financial management strategies while assisting the Superintendent and Board in achieving the Division’s goals. They also have broad experience in areas that include finance, audit, budget, FOIP, maintenance, caretaking, legal, supply management, facility planning & transportation.

A strong advocate for the needs of students and staff, the successful candidate will be able to build positive working relationships, support the jurisdiction’s priorities and goals, demonstrate compassion, champion public education, work collaboratively with local and provincial partners, and maintain accountability for the work of the team. They balance attention to details along with an understanding of the big picture. The successful candidate has experience leveraging technology to enhance organizational effectiveness.

The successful candidate will be a personable, approachable leader, who is a strong communicator with a good understanding and ability to lead initiatives in support of divisional goals.
