Reporting to the Vice President of Finance & Administration, the Controller is responsible for managing the overall financial operations of Fort Edmonton Management Company and will provide accurate information to the Executive and the Board of Directors. This includes analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.

The Controller will be a leader in creating and sustaining a customer service-oriented and business partner culture in the finance team and will be a valued business partner to all management of FEMCo.  This role will always be looking for ways to add value and improve processes and provide financial operational support to all areas of the business.

The Controller is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, controlling, and evaluating the operation of the finance department. This role will develop and implement financial policies and internal controls. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:    

  • Lead the finance team, including hiring, training, and coaching

  • Manage the accounting operations including month-end, banking, cash handling, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and reporting

  • Budgeting and forecasting

  • Prepare, analyze and present monthly, quarterly and annual operating results for each department compared to budget/forecast as well as consolidated monthly, quarterly and annual reports and external reporting to financial institutions, ensuring that all reporting requirements are met

  • Work with Customer Experience and Operations to define, measure, analyze, improve and control current processes which impact customer quality and influence internal operating efficiency

  • Provide strategic analysis as required to drive improved decision making

  • Responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of financial information

  • Implementation and management of internal controls with respect to financial policies, processes and procedures

  • Provides advice and guidance on all accounting matters including financial systems, record keeping, analysis, and reporting

  • Sets the priorities within the accounting group

  • Coordinating the year-end audit and preparation of audited financial statements; liaising with external auditors and audit committee

  • Supporting new systems or project selections and implementation from a strategic finance and internal control perspective

  • Ensures rapid and consistent collection of receivables by refining and implementing control mechanisms

  • With input from the VP of Finance & Administration, is responsible for the formulation of accounting policies, procedures, and controls

  • Develop and maintain an effective and collaborative relationship with the City of Edmonton finance support team and others as necessary

  • Other related duties as required or assigned

Qualifications required:  

  • University degree in Business/Accounting

  • CPA designation

  • Minimum 5 years of leadership and accounting experience
