Capital Power Corporation is currently seeking an innovative and results-oriented individual to join our dynamic Financial Reporting team!

As a Manager, Financial Reporting, you will be primarily responsible for the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and the management’s discussion and analysis (MD&A) document in accordance with Canadian securities regulations. You will also play a key role in working with the Senior Manager, Financial Reporting to provide guidance on various accounting matters to cross-functional groups of Capital Power. This role may be involved with overseeing the monthly general ledger close, consolidated process and preparing various monthly and/or quarterly reporting.

You will contribute to our team by 

Preparing annual and interim MD&A, financial statements and related disclosures for Capital Power and its subsidiaries for external reporting. This includes maintaining a strong understanding of IFRS and US GAAP as well as emerging accounting issues and related disclosures.

  • General ledger close and consolidation processes

    • Managing the general ledger close and consolidation processes and timelines to support timely delivery of financial statements and MD&A documents.

    • Building and maintaining collaborative relationships by managing the process, timelines, expectations, and flow of information between other Finance groups, external auditors, and Financial Reporting ensuring timely receipt of accurate information while realizing efficiency and best use of resources.

  • Research

    • Researching complex accounting matters and accounting issues that may cover various areas of IFRS; recommending disclosure format and implementation process for newly effective accounting practices.

    • Acting as an IFRS technical specialist, contributing to the organization with advanced knowledge of appropriate accounting treatments in accordance with IFRS.

    • Providing training to the Analyst, Financial Reporting, and others in the organization on current and emerging IFRS topics.

    • Preparing position papers supporting recommendations of accounting treatments to cross-functional groups of Capital Power. This may include recommendations on the financial impact of potential acquisitions, divestitures, or future financing options.

  • Audit

    • Managing review of the recommendations by external auditors, Senior Manager, Financial Reporting, and Controller.

    • Helping facilitate the relationship between the external auditors and other teams that are impacted by the quarterly review and year-end audit process to realize efficiencies.

  • Other

    • Providing input into the recruitment process for new hires in Financial Reporting.

    • Coaching and mentoring of the Analyst, Financial Reporting; communicating job expectations, completing performance reviews, and discussions, and providing constructive feedback.

  • Providing input and recommendations that will impact strategic decisions/plans including financial data input or technical accounting advice into corporate acquisitions and divestitures decisions.

  • Determining required financial system improvements and make recommendations to the Senior Manager, Financial Reporting on maintenance and optimization options.

  • Ensuring procedures are well developed and established internal controls are operating effectively.

  • Acting as a role model in demonstrating Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) orientation while adhering to HSE procedures/rules and standards and help forge a diverse and inclusive environment in the Financial Reporting team.

What you will bring to the role  

Education:

  • Post-secondary degree specializing in accounting.

  • Canadian CPA accounting designation is required.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in a public accounting firm or financial reporting department or equivalent.

Technical Skills:

  • Strong IFRS knowledge required.

  • Working knowledge of IFRS is required and of US GAAP is an asset.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with Oracle and Power BI is considered an asset.

  • Experience with the Utilities industry and reporting requirements of a publicly listed company is also considered an asset.

  • Hybrid office/ work from home arrangements

  • Minimum travel required.
